The method of visiting the shrine of the Holy Prophet (a.s) is as follows:
When you arrive in the holy city of al-Madinah, you may bathe yourself, preparing yourself for the ziy¡rah. When you intend to enter the Masjid al-Nabiy, you should stop at the door of the mosque and recite the FIRST form of asking permission for entering there, You may enter from the Gate of Archangel Gabriel (B¡b Jibrael) preceding the right foot to the left. You may then repeat the following one hundred times:
|
Allah is the Greatest |
allahu akbar |
You may then offer the two Rak`ah prayer of Greeting the Mosque (tahiyyat al-masjid). After that, you may walk to the holy chamber that included the tomb of the Holy Prophet. There, you may touch it with your hand, kiss it, and say the following:
|
assalamu `alayka y¡ ras£la all¡hi |
Peace be upon you; O the Messenger of Allah. |
|

wa `al¡ ahli baytika al§§¡hir¢na |
and upon your Household, the Immaculate. |
You may then stand near the fore pillar on the right hand side of the tomb with the minbar to your right, facing the kiblah, and this is where the Holy Prophet’s head rests. You may then say the following:
|

and the Messenger had (also) asked forgiveness for them, |

|

Here I am, before you, asking Allah’s forgiveness, repenting from my sins, |
|

wa inn¢ atawajjahu bika il¡ all¡hi rabby wa rabbika liyaghfira l¢ dhun£b¢ |
and seeking your intercession for me before Almighty Allah—your and my Lord—that He may forgive my sins. |
If you have a certain need to pray Almighty Allah for its settlement, you may stand before the holy tomb and make it between your shoulders, face the direction of the kiblah, raise your hands, and ask for the settlement of your need, for it is predictable that your need will be settled, Allah willing.
Ibn Qawlawayh, in a considerable way of narration, has reported Mu¦ammad ibn Mas`£d as saying that he, once, saw Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) coming near the tomb of the Holy Prophet, putting his hand on it, and saying the following:
|
as'alu all¡ha alladhy ijtab¡ka wakht¡raka |
I pray Allah -Who has chosen, selected, |
|
wa had¡ka wa had¡ bika |
and guided you, and guided (others) through you- |
|
an yu¥alliya `alayka |
to bless You. |
The Imam (a.s) then recited the following holy verse:
|
inna all¡ha wa mal¡’ikatahu yu¥all£na `al¡ alnnabiyyi |
Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; |
|
y¡ ayyuh¡ alladh¢na ¡man£ ¥all£ `alayhi wa sallum£ tasl¢man. |
O you who believe! Call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation. |
In ‘Mi¥b¡¦ al-Mutahajjid,’ Shaykh al-±£siy says: When you finish praying near the tomb (of the Holy Prophet), you may come to the minbar,([1]) pass your hand over it, hold the two lower pommels, and then rub yoru face and eyes, for this brings about eye healing. You may then offer prayers there, praise and thank Almighty Allah, and ask for the settlement of your needs. In this respect, the Holy Prophet (a.s) is reported to have said, “The area between my tomb and my minbar is one of the gardens of Paradise. My minbar is situated at one the gates of Paradise.” You may then come near the standing-place of the Holy Prophet (maq¡m al-nabiy) and offer as many as possible prayers therein. You may also offer as many as possible prayers in the Masjid al-Nabiy, for the reward of one prayer herein is equal to the reward of one thousand prayers (offered at other places). Whenever you enter or leave the Masjid al-Nabiy, you may pray Almighty Allah for sending blessings upon the Holy Prophet. You may also offer prayers at the House of Lady F¡§imah (a.s). You may also visit the standing-place of Archangel Gabriel (maq¡m jibr¡’¢l), which lies under the waterspout. At this very place, Archangel Gabriel used to stay after he would ask permission of the Holy Prophet (a.s). At this place, you may say the following:
|
as’aluka ay jaw¡du |
I beseech You, O All-magnanimous, |
|
ay kar¢mu |
O All-generous, |
|
ay qar¢bu |
O Nigh, |
|
ay ba`¢du |
O Remote, |
|
an tarudda `alayya ni`mataka |
to renew Your boons to me. |
In his book of ‘Z¡d al-Ma`¡d,’ `All¡mah al-Majlisiy, within the recommended acts on the seventeenth of Rab¢` al-Awwal, the Holy Prophet’s birthday, says that Shaykh al-Muf¢d, Shaykh al-Shah¢d, and Sayyid Ibn ±¡w£s instructed the following: When you intend to visit the Holy Prophet (a.s) while you are not at the holy city of al-Mad¢nah, you may bathe yourself, stand before something like a grave, write the name of the Holy Prophet on it, concentrate heartily on it, and say the following:
|
ash-hadu an l¡ il¡ha ill¡ all¡hu wa¦hadu l¡ shar¢ka lahu |
I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any associate; |
|
wa ash-hadu anna mu¦ammadan `abduhu wa ras£luhu |
and I bear witness that Mu¦ammad is His servant and Messenger, |
|
and that he is the Master of the ancient and coming generations, |
|
wa annhu sayyidu alanby¡‘i wal-mursal¢na |
and that he is the chief of all Prophets and Messengers. |
|
all¡humma ¥alli `alayhi wa `al¡ ahli baytihi al |
O Allah: send blessings upon him and upon his Household—the Immaculate Imams. |
You may then say the following:

ash-hadu y¡ ras£la all¡hi ma`a kulli sh¡hidin |
O the Messenger of Allah: I bear witness—and I join everyone who bear witness |
|
wa ata¦ammluh¡ `an kull j¡¦idin |
and also bear witness rather than everyone who may deny it— |
|
annaka qad ballghta ris¡l¡ti rabbka |
that you conveyed the messages of your Lord (flawlessly), |
|
wa na¥a¦ta li’ummtika |
and you offered your nation good advice, |
|
wa j¡hadta f¢ sab¢li rabbka |
and you strove in the way of your Lord, |
|
wa ¥ada`ta bi-amrihi |
and you expounded openly what you were commanded, |
|
wa¦tamalta aladh¡ f¢ janbihi |
and you stood harm for the sake of Him, |
|
and you called to the way of Him with excellent wisdom and fair exhortation, |
|
and you fulfilled the duty with which you were commissioned, |
|
and you, verily, were compassionate to the believers, |
|
wa ghalu¨ta `al¡ alk¡fir¢na |
and you were strong against the unbelievers, |
|
wa `abadta all¡ha mukhli¥an ¦att¡ at¡ka aliyaq¢nu |
and you worshipped Allah sincerely until death came upon you; |
|
fabalagha all¡hu bika ashrafa ma¦all almukarram¢na |
therefore, Almighty Allah has exalted you to the most honorable position of the ennobled ones |
|
wa a`l¡ man¡zili almuqarrab¢na |
and to the most elevated place of the intimate servants of Him |
|
wa arfa`a daraj¡ti almursal¢na ¦aythu l¡ yal¦aquka l¡¦iqun |
and to the most exalted ranks of the Messengers where none can come up with you, |
|
wa l¡ yf£quka f¡’iqun |
and none can excel you, |
|
wa l¡ yasbiquka s¡biqun |
and none can overtake you, |
|
wa la ya§ma`u f¢ idr¡kika §¡mi`un |
and none can even think of obtaining your rank. |
|
al¦amdu lill¡hi alladhy astanqadhan¡ bika mina alhalakati |
All praise be to Allah Who saved us from perdition through you, |
|
